Welcome to Fun with Zymurgy!
Terms
All of the below are fermented alcoholic beverages transformed from simple ingredients by the application of yeast. That's what makes them fun!
- BEER is a carbonated beverage made with water and starches, typically MALT and extracts of other grains, and preserved with hops (which give it a characteristic bitter taste).
- MALT is just sprouted grain, but is surprisingly sweet.
- WINE is made with grape juice. The yeast may actually be native on the fruit and not added at all.
- CHAMPAGNE is essentially carbonated wine (Oh, I can feel the flames now).
- MEAD is made with water and honey. It may be the most ancient of all fermented beverages.
- CIDER is made with apples (and sometimes pears).
- MELOMEL is MEED with fruit in it
- METHEGLIN is MEAD with herbs and/or spices in it
- PYMENT is MEAD with grape juice. Where do they GET these names?
- PERRY is CIDER made from only pears.
The cider variants doubtless have specific names, just like the mead variants do, but I can't be bothered to look for 'me right now.
