Ahh, the Jacob's Ladder, staple for mad science rooms everywhere.

This one was pretty, but was placed outdoors so the naked electrodes tended to blow out, or the spark would not rise. It needed to be inside... or wrapped in a clear wind shield.

This was actually a re-make of this device. It uses a 10kv or so, fairly ancient, oil-burner ignitor coil which I got free in the, mmm, let's just say, last decade or so.
