Yang Form Applications

6 Nov 2005, started page with Chuck's notes

21-27 Nov 2005, edited, restructured, and simplified

Follows the steps of the short form.

Commencement

  • Choke from front

Pull your hands back toward your shoulders, circle in and around opponent's forearms, capture the forarms to their chest, and then push.

  • Push low

Pull opponent down (follow up with knee strike)

Grasp Sparrow's Tail

  • Right punch high

[optional Step back with right foot] and deflect with right hand ward. Step with left foot (wide enough to leave room to whip) and strike with back of left hand while extending opponent's right arm. This move should include 2 spiral/spring coilings.

...Ward Off, Roll-back, Press, Push

  • Right punch high...

Right arm wards off punch, turning opponent and checking their shoulder with your left hand.

  • ... to left punch high...

Pull opponent down and to your left, giving strength to this motion by sinking and shifing back.

Adjust your back and front foot, laying your right arm against the opponent, and press them over (resisting the urge to shoulder strike).

  • ... to choke high attack

Circle your arms inside and around theirs, capturing their forearms against their chest and pushing.

Single Whip

  • Charge or left punch high

Sweep the opponent to the left with both hands.

  • Right punch high

Hook with your right hand (CCW, or outside in) to deflect the punch. Check their elbow with your left and whip the right wrist up to strike the opponent's face.

  • Right punch high (2)

Deflect the punch down with the left hand [optionally strike with the right whip].

  • Left punch high

Deflect punch with the left hand [optionally strike with the right whip].

  • Left punch high (2)

Hook with your right hand and catch/push the opponent's left arm high and back to their left (opening them up), following up with a left-hand push or strike.

Lift Hands

  • Choke from front

Deflect the choke by opening your hands, and then strike their neck with your right hand when closing. Note that the attack, and hence the opening, is from the right side. The opening is firm, with bing energy.

  • Right punch high

Deflect the punch by opening your right arm, then place your left on their elbow and strike their face with your right.

Shoulder Strike

  • Left punch low

Deflect the punch with your right shoulder (turning at the waist and stepping the back foot around but keeping it close). Step low into their space and strike with the shoulder.

You may position with two steps (step back with left, step forward with right) or three (position left, move right, forward left).

White Crane Spreads Wings

  • Right or Left punch high

Deflect the with the right arm. With a left-right combination, you can deflect the first rising and the second with a downward deflection.

  • Right Kick

Deflect the kick to the left with your left arm (with a follow-up kicking them in the groin)

Brush Knee Push (right)

  • Right punch (high or low)

Lean and step towards the punch, intercepting it and deflecting it down/left with your left arm's circle. As part of the motion, push the opponent with your right.

Note that an earlier version had you stepping back instead.

Note that brush knee push left is simply reversed.

  • Right Kick

Brush the kick to the side with the left arm while doing a strike to the throat with the right hand.

Playing Guitar

  • Right punch (high or low)

Sit back to give the punch room to empty, and then strike the hands together catching the arm at the elbow and wrist.

Brush Knee Push (left)

Step Forward, Deflect Down, Intercept, and Punch

  • Right Punch (high or low)

With a spiral motion of your right fist, deflect the punch out to the right [optionally stepping right and to the side]. Check their arm with your left hand, disengage your right, step forward with your left foot and strike with the right.

Withdraw and Push

  • Opponent grabs right elbow [or wrist]

Cross the arms, turnining slightly to the left. Catching the opponents wrist across your left fore-arm, sink and wipe their grip off of your arm.

Cross Hands

  • Right or Left Punch High

Block the punch upwards with the cross.

Embrace Tiger, Return to Mountain

  • Kick from behind (45-degree back-right)

When the opponent kicks at you from about a 45-degree position behind you, use your waist to turn your body and to pull your right foot around; then grab/block the lower leg with your front hand, and place the other hand on the opponent's body or upper hip, and push. (Sometimes I've seen this used with the defender putting his/her hand on the opponent's calf, and sometimes I've seen the defender just having the forearm against the opponent.)

Grasp Sparrow's Tail

Diagonal Single Whip

Fist Under Elbow

  • Left Punch High

Catch the punch with a soft left arm and let it turn you as you deflect it left, moving the left foot around and back.

[Optional follow-up, you can strike the opponent with the right-hand beak at the base of their skull]

Hook the opponent's shoulder with the right hand and roll their shoulder forward while spinning their arm up as your left hand circles up.

Step forward and continue the circle motion, forcing the opponent down and their arm up and back. Keep connected and use your weight.

  • Other Punch to Face

Starting in fist-under-elbow position, slap the punch straight down with the left hand and spin the right up into a back-fist to the face strike.

You can ìdouble upî by using both hands, bringing the left hand back into a fist and circling it in the same manner, to deliver a follow-up back-fist to the opponent. Sort of a buzz-saw effect.

Repulse Monkey (three)

  • Right Punch High

Step back with your right foot, while deflecting the opponent's punch down and to the right with your right hand.

Grab the opponent's right wrist with your right hand, and use your left hand to apply a jamming pressure to the elbow. Apply the move in front of you (not to side or behind you).

If the opponent has great momentum/forward-movement, use a pull-back instead). Focus on the waist turn to generate force.

Slant Flying

  • Left Punch Low

Deflect the punch down and to your left slightly[optionally grab the opponent's wrist], possible adjusting the left (back) foot with the deflection, like shoulder strike.

Step behind the opponent with your right foot, snug up behind the opponent's legs, positioning your right shoulder into the opponent's left armpit. Point the toe in the direction where you want your force to go!

Shifting forward, tilt, and rotate as you raise your arm -- all together -- forcing the opponent back over your leg. Be sure to follow through with both arms in a splitting action.

This move also can be applied above the opponent's arm instead of having to get so deep and low.

Cloud Hands (three)

  • Punch or Kick

Use your cloud-hands upward or downward blocks/deflects against your opponent's punches or kicks from either side. Focus on having an embracing-horse type posture, and the movement coming from the waist, not the handsñthis gives the move more power.

The Left arm deflects a Left High Punch, The Right arm deflects a Left Low Punch.

Single Whip

Snake Creeps Down

  • Right punch high or mid, or weapon lunge

Block the attack with the left arm and guide it down and around, while stepping back into position.

Roll the attack back up and to the side, locking their arm into position naturally.

The strike may be any of several: strike with the right hand or elbow, or capture their neck and pull them down while striking with your right knee. (e.g. Golden Rooster)

Golden Rooster Stands on Leg (left, right)

This is the strike used after Snake Creeps Down, above

Also, simple deflections.

Demo sequence: Right Punch High (step back onto right, block with Left High). Left Punch High, Right Punch High (offer an offensive kick after blocking)

Transition to Separate Right Foot

  • Left Punch High

Block the punch with the right forearm, like in shoulder-strike, keeping elbow active. Check with left hand (gripping opponent), circle right hand up and over and roll the opponent's arm/shoulder over and down.

Separate Left Foot

  • Left Punch High

Opponent at 45 degree angle to your front and right

Block with the right arm and kick to the groin as you deflect.

Transition to Separate Left Foot

  • Right Punch High

Deflect and catch opponent's arm with your right hand, catch their upper arm with your left. Rolling forward and down, shift to their center.

Separate Left Foot

Turn Around and Heel Kick

  • Right Punch High

Deflect it with the left arm and heal kick to their shin, knee, or abdomen

Brush Knee Push (right)

Brush Knee Push (left)

Step Up and Punch to Groin

Like brush-knee push but with a strike===

Step Forward, Grasp Sparrow's Tail

Single Whip

Fair Lady Works the Shuttle (4)

  • Right Punch High from Behind

Opponent 45 degrees behind and to the right

Turn and intercept the punch with your right hand, stepping back and out with your right foot, deflecting the punch up and across, tangling the opponent.

Using both hands, shove the opponent.

  • Right Punch High

Raise your right arm to force the opponent's arm across opponent's face, and then shove opponent away with your left arm.

Note that in these applications, the elbow of the upper arm stays down and the turn is a spiraling turn from bottom to top, not just from side to side.

Grasp Sparrow's Tail

Single Whip

Snake Creeps Down

Step Up Seven Stars

  • Punch High

Catch the punch in the 'X' of your forearms, deflecting it up. Follow-through with a rude kick.

Step Back and Ride the Tiger

  • Left Kick Low

Intercept the kick with crossed hands (X-position)

With your left hand, deflect (and preferably hold) the opponent's left leg to the left

Free the right arm as you turn to the right (keeping your left to the left), strike the opponent's neck with the right.

Their momentum should also be carrying them in to you, if the kick was committed.

Turn Around and Sweep the Lotus

  • Right Punch High

With momentum

Deflect the punch right with your right or both hands.

As your body turns with the deflection, wind the spring in your leg to the left and then whip it around into your opponent.

(Turn your body with your opponent, spinning on the ball of your right foot, then stepping and shifting quickly to your left, and then throwing the lotus kick into the opponent's back as the opponent passes by.)

  • Left Punch High

Essentially the same, except deflect them to the left and use their momentum to help wind the spring, kicking them in the solar plexus.

Shoot Tiger with Bow

  • Left Punch High

Step to right and at them (intercepting) and use right arm to block and deflect the punch up. This has more of a ride the tiger feel than a four-corners feel.

Using your turning motion and momentum, strike straight in with your left fist (a punch that spins off your waist).

Step Forward, Deflect Down, Intercept, and Punch

Withdraw and Push

Cross Hands
