Brains

Back in 2004 I made a shell mold around an anatomical brain model (see BodyParts) and then I cast a couple of brains in that mold. I never liked the mold -- it curled! What cheek! And the brains were only decent. I wanted something slightly bigger and with a better mold.

So this year I sculpted a brain pretty much from scratch and cast a large, expensive block mold out of urethane around it, which in turn was encased in a hydrostone mother mold. Hefty stuff, but should last ages.

Here are a few pics of the resulting brain. One of my air sprews got clogged, and my silicon pour was a bit bubbly, so it's not perfect... I was in a hurry! I'll make better brains later.

The silicon itself is EcoFlex-010 from Smooth-On, which is amazing, soft, squishy, disturbing stuff. As squishy as this was, real brains are far squishier... more like Jello I hear (though formalin toughens them up nicely).

Sorry about the bad focus on some of these... it was dark.
